Melting Glaciers And There Effects

September 29th, 2011 posted by admin

I am one of those people who are really concerned about the environment and the effects of things we are doing to it on the future of this planet we live on called Earth. One of the things that is continually concerning me has to do with the melting glaciers. Melting glaciers are found in the icy regions of the earth. The two poles are their main areas of concentration.

When glaciers melt faster than ice can be replenished there are very few benefits to be had.

Usually there will be some very serous repercussions. Here are a few of them that may need to be printed on banner stands so that more people would know.

Sea-level Rise

On higher altitudes the water that forms when glaciers melt will create rivers that will make their way to the sea. At lower altitudes such as sea level glaciers that melt do so and empty straight into the sea. This has contributed greatly to the current rise in sea level that is averaging some 2mm yearly. Sooner or later what this will mean is that coastal towns and cities will have to relocate because of the impending flooding. Once it is melted, the heat from the sun hits the earth and increase global warming. Icebergs get melted and water level is increased. Fresh water supply becomes over flooded with salt water from the increased sea water.

Hydroelectric shortage

A number of countries worldwide depend greatly on hydroelectricity and here the plants depend of melting glaciers to provide the desired amount of water to generate power. When the flow of water falls or stops so will electricity production.

Loss of Habitat for Fish, Birds, and Animals

Quite a number of fish, birds and animals are dependent on glaciers for their very survival. Whether it’s the fish, low temperatures, or sea plants provided by the glacier these animals cannot do without them.

Melting glaciers cannot be stopped some scientists believe so we have to make the necessary adjustments to our world and our lifestyle.
