The Forum Trap
There’s no point me denying it: I am a forum user of epic proportions. Yeah, I’m one of those people who you see posting time and time again. I am the familiar voice on fantasy book forums, games forums and every other forum (especially if it’s connected in any small way to WoW).
And so I know all the tricks. I can sense when two different users – sometimes three – is actually one user trying to pretend and get away with it. I can also sense when someone has posted just to annoy people, to fire start, to get peoples goats.
I can also sense The Forum Trap.
The Forum Trap, if you’re not familiar – and it’s good to be specific as not everyone has the same name for the same traps – is when someone posts an inviting question, then, when that person responds with their opinion, goes massively on the attack and makes them look foolish. I’ve seen it time and time again. An example of such a Trap might be as follows:
trappers are there, lying in wait, so be wise to their evil plans and schemes
User A: Hey, so what’s your opinion on the fantasy covers of 2008.
Now, User A knows full well that 2008 was a bad year for fantasy book covers. So they’ve placed this Trap to trick User B. For one they want to be ambiguous and that’s why they missed out the book part, to trip them up, and for another thing they obviously want to see when they became a fan. Their guess, then, is that the Trap will snare them and User B will look ridiculous.
User B responds with: I really liked them actually, you?
User A says: I hated them. Funny you should say that, 2008 wasn’t the best year for fantasy book covers…
And so it goes on. Seriously: it doesn’t matter if you frequent forums which talk about the merits of
4×4 cars or forums which discuss the logistics of cocaine – they are all the same. And the trappers are there, lying in wait, so be wise to their evil plans and schemes. Personally, I don’t see what the point is. But I guess to them it’s a kind of game.
There is a way to combat this, of course: you could be like me and devise your own trap to trap the trappers. It works sometimes, not all the time – too smart for their own good – but when it does, my, it gives you a rush!
And now enough of my ranting. Goodbye!
