Being like Mrs Wild

We as humans like things done neatly: we want a neat immigration service, neat haircuts and neat clothing, shirts tucked in if we’re going to work in an office. I started to notice this as a youngster: the bushes on our street were all trimmed perfectly, the houses were all built perfectly with everything symmetrical, and generally speaking, unless you looked very closely every single house looked exactly the same in the night-time. Every one but Mrs Wild’s, who dad said had “gone bananas” and was a “risk to everyday people”. I didn’t understand what he meant by that. Ok, so her garden was a bit overgrown and her house looked as though fourteen different people had had a go at adding their own stuff to the lounge one after the other – wearing a blindfold, while drunk – but so what? Was that a bad thing? That was to be the start of my life thinking that I didn’t need to be like everyone else. I could be like Mrs Wild, I could do what I wanted to do, even if it didn’t fit in. And so I did, and the adults called it “your rebellious streak”. They expected it to die a death as soon as I entered adulthood, but were soon horrified to discover that this was a genetic thing embedded in me that would likely never vanish. And therefore here I am now, feeling better for it, and encouraging you to follow your heart and do what you want to, just like Mrs Wild. Of course, the world will go against you massively if you choose to follow my advice – as you will know if you have already been following this ethos for any amount of time. But don’t listen to them, and remember that just because a million people decide that wearing tight jeans is the best thing since sliced bread, or that wearing the coats of dead animals looks really good, it doesn’t mean you have to agree. You don’t have to, you can be an “individual”.
